East Meets West In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, most major American cities had hospitals that catered to specific ethnic groups. San Francisco, for example, had the German Hospital, French Hospital and Jewish Hospital. And on this date in 1925, the city became the home of the first hospital in America founded for Chinese-Americans. The Chinese Hospital is still at its original location on Jackson Street in Chinatown and continues to be a bilingual facility, although its services have been thoroughly modernized and it now offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient care.
