Black Medical Journal After the Civil War, black doctors were needed to tend to the many freed slaves in the city of Nashville, Tenn. A gift from Samuel Meharry and his four brothers in 1876 helped establish one of the most respected black medical schools in the country, Meharry Medical School in Nashville. A graduate of this school founded the first black medical journal. Miles Vandahurst Lynk published the first issue of Medical and Surgical Observer on this date in 1892. Little is written about Lynk except this 19th century description: "A graduate of Meharry Medical School, now practicing physician at Jackson, Tennessee, publishes a Medical Magazine, known as the Medical and Surgical Observer."
