Film: 147 Toddlers Infected in Uzbek HIV Outbreak
March 22, 2010

MOSCOW (AP) -- A respected online publication claims that an AIDS outbreak at two children's hospitals in the Central Asian nation of Uzbekistan has killed at least 14 children and left 133 infected with HIV.

Daniil Kislov, the editor of Ferghana.ru, said the 2007 outbreak of the virus that causes AIDS was first reported in a documentary produced by Uzbek prosecutors for government television. The documentary never aired because Uzbek authorities had second thoughts about broadcasting it.

The documentary, posted Monday on Ferghana.ru's Web site, reported that 12 doctors and nurses in the eastern city of Namangan were convicted of treating the children with contaminated medical equipment.

Uzbek officials, including prosecutors, were not available to comment on the documentary.
