NY Man's Kidney Transplant Gave Him Woman's Cancer
May 27, 2010

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jurors are deliberating the case of a New York City man who received a donor kidney and died in what experts say may be the only known case of uterine cancer being transmitted by transplant.

The widow of Vincent Liew (LOO) is suing NYU Langone Medical Center for malpractice in his 2002 death.

He was told six weeks after receiving a donated kidney that the female donor had uterine cancer. He decided to keep the kidney after his doctor said the risk of contracting the disease was small.

Liew had the kidney removed about six months later and died within weeks of cancer his autopsy said had come from the donor.

NYU says it advised Liew of the risk, honored his choice and aggressively monitored the kidney for signs of cancer.
