Study Finds Possible Heart Risk with Prostate Drug

(ASSOCIATED PRESS) - A study testing a drug to prevent prostate cancer has turned up a possible risk of heart failure.

GlaxoSmithKline already sells the drug Avodart (AV-oh-dart) to treat urinary problems and says no heart risk has been seen with that use. The company wants federal approval to also sell Avodart to prevent prostate cancer in men who are at higher risk of the disease.

A study of 6,700 men given Avodart or dummy pills found the drug lowered the risk of prostate cancer being diagnosed. However, nearly twice as many men on Avodart developed heart failure compared to those on dummy pills.

Results are in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.
