June 22, 2010NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- A new report on the U.N.'s Millennium Development Goals says 10 African countries have halved their poverty rates but that child mortality has increased in six sub-Saharan nations.
Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region registering an increase in the mortality rate for children younger than 5 years. Thirty-four of the world's 36 countries with child mortality rates above 100 per 1,000 births are in sub-Saharan Africa. The others are Afghanistan and Myanmar.
The countries that halved their poverty rates since 1990 include Ethiopia, Egypt and Angola. But poverty has risen in Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
The Millennium Developing Goals Report Card was released Tuesday to coincide with meetings of G-8 and G-20 countries in Canada beginning Friday.
